Darlington House

The Darlington house was created in 1925 as a luxury summer residence for Mrs. Herbert Darlington and her children. Later in 1931, Richard Requa, the eminent architect and authority on Spanish architecture, created an addition on the property. The Darlington house is alive with designs and details from many cultures; urns, tiles, benches and a fountain from Seville, Spain, marble columns from Greece and Italy and mosaics from Egyptian mosques. The living room with its double French doors, leads you to the brick paved Egyptian courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by white stucco walls, softened by espaliered vines and trees and features a reflecting pool lined with Egyptian tiles. A few steps farther and you are in the Andalusian Patio, a replica of a courtyard from the South of Spain, a perfect spot for cocktails.
Both the patio and the courtyard open into the Rose Garden, a large area surrounded by roses and azaleas, ideal for your reception or ceremony.

We chose The Darlington House as one of SanDiegoWedding.com's top 25 wedding sites because your entire event is affected by this beautiful old home. From the moment you enter the front door you are transported back to a time of elegance, graciousness and, above all, manners. The Darlington House is operated by the Social Services League of La Jolla, a non-profit public benefit corporation which focuses on the needs of the elderly retired community of La Jolla, allowing low income seniors to live with dignity.
The Darlington House has maintained its gracious charm to continue to be one of San Diego's most lovely and historic wedding and reception sites. And the icing on the cake is that your wedding fee goes to a good cause.

By the way, if you are looking for a raging party reception, keep looking. The Darlington House demands respect. The house is furnished with antiques, the rose garden is lovingly maintained and the entire property is an historic monument. This is a very special place that is run by special people, many of whom are volunteers from the League House next door; the retirement home supported by the Social Services League. So please be polite.
