Meet Wedding Photographer Kirstin Burrows

Meet Wedding Photographer Kirstin Burrows! We love Kirstin for her talent and her way with people. Says this talented lady, “I believe in connection, for me it all started with the first time that my husband and I saw each other, we connected over a music-stand and wrong notes which began our crazy unique walk together. We will keep taking this journey together until the walk is a shuffle and it takes longer to complete, but I would not have it any other way with any other person.” View more of Kirstin Burrow’s wedding work on her website.

Kirstin’s hearts desire is to capture not only the tender connection that only you know about but the essences of your true love. She says, “I understood what the meaning of true love is from my grandparents, that it was about making the simple things special, like the laugh that can lighten a room that changes the littlest moment into the best.  Marriage is forever no matter how difficult or simple the day is, it is about walking through the day together and falling in love all over again.”

IMG_1226.JPEG

“Love is so much more than what is portrayed in movies. It is meant to fight for one another and build each other up. It is the struggles between the I do and the happily ever-after that I strive to capture. For us the struggles are laundry, our beagles, being parents with the highs and lows, worshiping our savior and walking hand in hand down the streets of the happiest place on earth.”

Why a Photographic Portrait Artist is your Best Friend at your Wedding

Paul Barnett, photographic artist, wedding photographer and portrait genius says “You live your life and we’ll tell your story by never missing the little things; your brother’s goofy smile, your dad’s hands, the look in your best friend’s eyes. We will build a collection of captivating photos that are genuine, unrehearsed and bring to life the small nuances that define us as individuals, close family and good friends. The late photographer Helen Levitt said it best… ‘To frame the telling gesture and walk across the threshold of another’s soul’” See more of this talented artists work.

Paul Barnett's "simple, yet revealing" portraiture breaks the complex rules of studio imagery and focuses on the soul. His photography is effortless and uncomplicated, bringing to life the real child. Paul’s work is evidence of his unobtrusiveness and his quick, spontaneous eye. He is invisible during the process, allowing his subjects to be relaxed, and most importantly, be themselves. His photographic intuition allows him to release the shutter at the decisive moment.

After opening his studio in 1991, Paul’s reputation soon grew as the preeminent wedding photojournalist and the choice for those families seeking genuine documentation of the growth and development of those we love.

Paul’s photographic intuition allows him to release the shutter at the decisive moment. Based on a mandate to be truly reactive rather than proactive and a dedication to record events as a historian rather than a director. The final result is a collection of photographs, genuine and unrehearsed, that bring to life the small idiosyncrasies that define us as individuals, close family and good friends.

And we think no one captures the joy of children better than Paul Barnett!

SASHA + YANECK AND MAGDA + MARCIN

IMG_0916.JPG

This Fab Four of Artists are best friends, and since June of 2014, business partners as well. They met each other few years ago at a wedding expo. Says Yaneck, “Even though our booths were not close to each other we right away knew that we would be friends. Few years later and Magda is Sasha’s maid of honor and Marcin and Yaneck can hang out for hours talking about photography, gear, landscaping, beer, and tons of other random topics. We would say that’s a pretty typical activity for San Diego wedding photographers:)....

It first started with Marcin photographing with Yaneck a good number of weddings. We quickly realized that even though our styles differ a little bit we love similar style of photography and most importantly we value high quality photographs. Overall, our style is mix of photojournalism and clean, fun, artistic portraits. We strive to create timeless photographs of your special days, moments, events in your life.

Photographing is so much fun and we often work together. Of course we have our “insider” jokes and our favorite one is: “Linda, but listen, I got a really good one!” So don’t think we are totally weird when we photograph your wedding and say it to each other:) But besides our insider jokes we want to make sure you have fun being photographed! So we promise we will make you laugh one way or another. Feel free to make fun of us as well!

Besides photography we all love to travel. The photo above it’s a self-portrait from a trip to the Death Valley National Park. When we saw this drive we knew it was calling our names! We often travel back to Poland and our favorite places in Europe are definitely Spain and Italy.”

Surprise Proposal at San Diego State is Chock Full of Joyous Feels

Photographers get to be a part of so many special moments and live downstream of so many feels! One of our favorites is the surprise proposal! And this one delivers on all the feels!!

Chelsea and Mick both attended San Diego State University and that’s how they met 6-1/2 years ago. He decided to propose on the rooftop of the dorm where they stayed. Family and friends were there with each giving her a rose as she walked down the "aisle" with them. Each loved one also gave her one word as a blessing, only to come to her boyfriend on bended knee! Chelsea was clearly surprised - and as you can probably guess from these awesome photos - said it was the best time of her life. Congratulations Chelsea and Mick!!!

Remember to Have Fun and Roll with the Surprises with Life AND Your Wedding Photos!

Life is full of surprises! And when you venture out into [very] public places with your best friends, feeling the love and connection you have, styled to look extra special, well you never know what you might attract! We love this photo by San Diego wedding photographers First and Orange Photography! It reminds us to roll with the surprises you might encounter and always have fun no matter who or what you run into!  We say don't fight surprises during a shoot, embrace them; stray lifeguards, surprise weather, people or happenings in your engagement photo session may make for some of your best times and most talked about memories. Being in the zone of love and connectedness makes for amazing memories and trying to control every aspect of life will kill a good mood [and good photo] every time - so plan for what you can and then enjoy life as it unfolds for you as a constant, joyful, surprise!

These Wedding Photos show why Black and White should always be part of Your Wedding Album

San Diego wedding Photographer Tim Otto Photography does it again.  Capturing real people and real emotion at a wedding is a gift and a talent; things Tim clearly possesses.  And there’s always something about black-and-white when it comes to photographing people - it’s strips away all the distractions and allows you to see the energy and connection and the emotions.  Another bonus? A Bride's skin is flawless in black and white and her look transcends current day trends to become timeless. So take a tip from Tim and make sure to add some black-and-white images to your wedding album!

Tim Otto Photography brings Beauty and Drama to your Engagement Photos

We caught up with local wedding photographer Tim Otto to get a little insight into this talented artists' aesthetic and why so many couples rave about working with him for their engagement and wedding photography!

Q: So Tim how would you define your style?
T: I like to blend a variety of styles when I photograph weddings: everything from a photojournalistic editorial approach to a contemporary fashion edge to classic romantic style.  I am comfortable photographing grand elegant celebrations at large venues and small intimate weddings on the beach. I can give direction to make sure everyone looks great and is in the best light but also can observe and make sure I'm in the right place to capture the spontaneous moments.

Q: Tim tell us a little about you.
T: I have been photographing for over 20 years but the last 15 have been devoted to weddings, engagement sessions and family portraits. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I truly love what I do and I aspire to produce the finest photography I am capable of without compromise. Creating photographs that you love is priceless. I was drawn to wedding photography and telling the story of the day by capturing the personalities, emotions and the desire to create amazing photographs!

Q: You are clearly a creative art photographer, why weddings?
T: I always enjoyed photographing people and capturing their individual spirits; I think this is what drew me to weddings. I love weddings! I love telling the story of the entire day by capturing the many personalities and emotions on display as the events unfold.  I want to capture not only what people look like, but show what they feel like.  I want to give my clients, dynamic and beautiful photographs that they will treasure for a lifetime! I want to create an amazing and fun experience by making my couples feel comfortable in front of the camera without interfering with the flow of the day. A wedding is a celebration of love with family and friends; truly an amazing event.  I am honored and privileged be part of your day.

Q: We know you love to travel, where have you shot?
T: I have photographed weddings through out the United States and countries around the world including Dominican Republic, Italy and Mexico.

Q: Anything special you like to do on days off?
T: I love deep sea fishing, camping in the High Sierras, watching the Chargers and Padres, cooking, music, wine, sushi, landscape photography, road trips and traveling to exotic locations... of course with my camera.

Thanks Tim for these lovely engagement photos! See more of Tim's photographic talent on his website and galleries

Shooting Your Engagement Photos in a Park: Featuring Joshua Tree and Paul Douda

We just LOVE seeing engagement photos from fun and adventurous places! Only certain photographers will 'shoot outside the box' and go the extra mile [literally] to create something extra special for you  like these gorgeous photos from Joshua Tree National Park by expert San Diego area wedding photographer Paul Douda.  We asked Paul for his tips [and even his secret spots!] for shooting at Joshua Tree and then Scott Moey from Live Once Live Wild offers us some great visitors info on Joshua Tree National Park.  All images by Paul Douda.... Enjoy!

Expert engagement, wedding and creative photographer Paul Douda shares his tips [secret spots!!] for getting everything you want out of a Joshua Tree engagement shoot:

Q: What things should one watch for to make this trek safe and fun?
A: Two things when it comes to Joshua Tree. First and foremost, the weather there should be planned for because certain times of year are extreme! (i.e. snow capped boulders are beautiful but the conditions can be cold and harsh. On the flip side it can be stunning when its warm but the sun can be blaring around 100+ degrees). However, planning for the right time of year can make for a much better experience. The best time of year, in my opinion, is late winter, mid-fall. Secondly, don't underestimate how much time could be spent to take advantage of the location. Its a long drive for most Southern Californians and the shifting light of the high desert can offers many different looks through the day. Get there early and take advantage of the time!

Q: What are the best times of year for your Joshua Tree engagement photo shoot?
A: Late winter or mid-fall. October was perfect and late February and March is good too - the days are perfect but the evenings can get very very cold!

Q: What should one bring along?
A: For the shoot pack anything that brings in your personality. Whether it is multiple wardrobe changes (that include multiple layers) or maybe even a telescope for star sightseeing!  Oh and enough gas and water, hey you should always be prepared.

Q: Okay spill, where are your secret spots for shooting?  [you know someone loves what they do when they share their secret spots!!]
A: You want to know our secret spots!? Just kidding! Keys View (highest point for the best panoramic view) - the road to Keys View has multiple turn offs that have very majestic views that you can pull over to the side of the road for equally spectacular views. Everyone tends to head to the Jumbo Rocks but there is a spot before you get there that is about a half mile east on Park Blvd from the intersection of Park Blvd and Joshua Tree National Park Blvd. There is an oval lot there to park and I love that spot.  [what a guy!!]

Q: Where is the best place to park?
A: Depends on the spot you're heading to. There are many turnouts and lots to park in for some of the popular spots in the park. However, parking is generally not an issue and it's common and acceptable to pull over on the side of the road and get out of your car for your shots.

Q: How should one work with the light  / is there a best time of day for shooting?
A: Each season has its own best time of day and consideration should be taken differently for sunsets. Despite the season, great light can really happy at the right time of day in any month. We all get there early and work with the light as we are shooting. An engagement session or shoot should be a big deal! We always plan to be together with our couples for an afternoon and evening so we tend to start around 1 or 2 and last into the evening. Time of day totally depends on the couple and the photographer because Joshua Tree is a little more elaborate than a typical park engagement session. We tell our couples to please let us know if they want deep, dark, rich, moody shots that we capture at nighttime, or if their personalities are better suited to the bright daylight of desert, sun, sand, and lots of natural light.....we are always open to whatever the couple is going for in their session.

Joshua Tree National Park is one of the nation´s largest desert areas that is officially protected by the U.S. government. Spanning an area that is larger than the state of Rhode Island, this desert paradise offers a whole range of outdoors activities, from desert hiking to star gazing.

In his awesome [and very complete] guide to the Joshua Tree National Park, he shares all the information you need to plan a one of a kind trip to one of our nation´s most unique ecosystems. Scott's guide is really a good read before visiting this beautiful and protected area.

Fun facts and tidbit's from Scott's comprehensive guide to Joshua Tree:

  • The park has over 790,000 acres, making it larger than the state of Rhode Island

  • Over half of the Joshua Tree National Park is a designated wilderness area waiting to be explored by desert lovers

  • The famous band “U2” has an album named after the national park´s namesake: The Joshua Tree

  • The name “Joshua Tree” was given by early Mormon settlers who thought that the tree looked like the biblical character of Joshua who raised his hands to the heavens

  • In Spanish, the tree is called “izote del desierto”, roughly translated as desert dagger

  • Joshua trees are an indicator species that designate an area as a desert

  • The Joshua Tree National Park is unique in that it encompasses two distinct desert ecosystems: the Colorado Desert which is a lowland desert and the higher Mojave Desert which is over 3,000 feet in elevation

  • Over 2.5 million people visited the park in 2016

  • Despite officially being a desert ecosystem, the Little Bernandino Mountains run through a part of the park and can occasionally receive snow fall during the winter months

  • Geologists estimate that the rock formations in the park are well over 100 million years old

  • There are also several oases located throughout the parks where lush green vegetation contrasts sharply with the dryness of the surrounding landscape

Spring Showers May Be Just What Your Wedding Photos Need

Your wedding day is full of constant worry like 'what about inclement weather?' A few tips for your big day...

Whether you choose to let someone else do the worrying for you, or you are prone to being the biggest worrywart, there are many things that can go wrong. So, fact is, worry is a big part of any wedding. Some of these concerns can be controlled, but some of these are way out of our control, like the weather. We can all agree that the weather has the potential to either make or break an event. What is important to remember, is that even if the weather does not work out in your favor, (even in San Diego!) you have the opportunity to make something spectacular out of it.  Chelsea and Courey Marshall's wedding happened to take place during a massive rainstorm.  But this couple managed to not only keep their cool, but also flourish during what could have been a major downer [beside being a downpour!] So, with May showers tickling the part of your brain that catalogs worries, don't have a melt down if your perfect day is accompanied by a little shower. Instead, take a deep breath, make whatever changes you need to make to adjust, and just have fun! If you keep your cool, and focus on the love, no matter the weather, we know that you'll end up with some awesome wedding photographs and memories like these! Scroll down for some tips on what to do if your outdoor wedding is facing possible rain....

Wedding Photography: Patrick Ibarra at Kramer Events

What to do if your outdoor wedding day forecast is rain....

1. Call a reliable rental company and rent a tent we recommend Classic Party Rentals or Intent Productions and have worked with both with incredible results.

2. Ask your wedding venue what they recommend. A professional reception venue should have an idea or a contingency plan in place.

3. If you are on your own or DIY'd at a park or home reach out to local indoor venues near your reception location {even restaurants) that may be able to accommodate you at the last minute.

3. Stay calm - and if you didn't hire a wedding planner already see if you can get one now! These people really know their stuff and a professional wedding planner will have handled emergencies far worse than this many times over and will know how to save your day! Plus they may have a few connections with venues to get you warm and dry!

4. Review the odds....It seems like the local weather services often forecast more precipitation than ever actually occurs... On average San Diego, California sees 21 days with some precipitation while the rest of the country sees about 110. The national average for mostly sunny days is 213 while San Diego's is 267.

4. Rent gorgeous rain umbrellas from Bella Umbrella and go for it anyway!  It's just rain it won't kill you and you may just have the time of your life!

Two of our favorite things come together for a lovely wedding photo

We love it when two of our favorite things come together to make such a beautiful finished product and Tim Otto Photography and the gorgeous La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla are two of our very favorite things and we think it's easy to see why....

IMG_2656.JPG

La Valencia hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla (known affectionately as the Pink Lady) offers some of the most beautiful wedding settings in Southern California. Tim Otto is one of the top wedding portrait, engagement and special event photographers and when these two come together well we're just in awe!

#2 The Maid of Honor Feels.
That sweet moment during the Maid of Honor's speech where she can't catch her breath from crying as she shares her joy and happiness for her best friend. Cue the Bride wiping away the tears and hold her hand through the rest of the speech.

#3 The Groom First Look Feels.
This love-filled Groom was speechless and broke down during the very first glimpse of his lovely Bride.

During their New Years Eve Rancho Santa Fe wedding, it was so cold outside that their wedding cake froze! When the Brides went to cut into it their knife handle broke off and their reactions were priceless!

#5 The Wedding Guest Feels
Your friends and family are feeling the love too! A very sweet and loving moment captured of married guests at a wedding. Proof that guests are just as in love as the Bride and Groom!

#6 The Joyful Family Feels.
This Mother of the Groom had a great time listening to the wedding party roast the Bride & Groom during their entrances. After all that emotion you really need a good laugh to celebrate such an amazing life event.
