Meet Wedding Photographer Kirstin Burrows

Meet Wedding Photographer Kirstin Burrows! We love Kirstin for her talent and her way with people. Says this talented lady, “I believe in connection, for me it all started with the first time that my husband and I saw each other, we connected over a music-stand and wrong notes which began our crazy unique walk together. We will keep taking this journey together until the walk is a shuffle and it takes longer to complete, but I would not have it any other way with any other person.” View more of Kirstin Burrow’s wedding work on her website.

Kirstin’s hearts desire is to capture not only the tender connection that only you know about but the essences of your true love. She says, “I understood what the meaning of true love is from my grandparents, that it was about making the simple things special, like the laugh that can lighten a room that changes the littlest moment into the best.  Marriage is forever no matter how difficult or simple the day is, it is about walking through the day together and falling in love all over again.”

“Love is so much more than what is portrayed in movies. It is meant to fight for one another and build each other up. It is the struggles between the I do and the happily ever-after that I strive to capture. For us the struggles are laundry, our beagles, being parents with the highs and lows, worshiping our savior and walking hand in hand down the streets of the happiest place on earth.”

SASHA + YANECK AND MAGDA + MARCIN

IMG_0916.JPG

This Fab Four of Artists are best friends, and since June of 2014, business partners as well. They met each other few years ago at a wedding expo. Says Yaneck, “Even though our booths were not close to each other we right away knew that we would be friends. Few years later and Magda is Sasha’s maid of honor and Marcin and Yaneck can hang out for hours talking about photography, gear, landscaping, beer, and tons of other random topics. We would say that’s a pretty typical activity for San Diego wedding photographers:)....

It first started with Marcin photographing with Yaneck a good number of weddings. We quickly realized that even though our styles differ a little bit we love similar style of photography and most importantly we value high quality photographs. Overall, our style is mix of photojournalism and clean, fun, artistic portraits. We strive to create timeless photographs of your special days, moments, events in your life.

Photographing is so much fun and we often work together. Of course we have our “insider” jokes and our favorite one is: “Linda, but listen, I got a really good one!” So don’t think we are totally weird when we photograph your wedding and say it to each other:) But besides our insider jokes we want to make sure you have fun being photographed! So we promise we will make you laugh one way or another. Feel free to make fun of us as well!

Besides photography we all love to travel. The photo above it’s a self-portrait from a trip to the Death Valley National Park. When we saw this drive we knew it was calling our names! We often travel back to Poland and our favorite places in Europe are definitely Spain and Italy.”

Featured Artist: San Diego Wedding Photographer Jay Resh

Meet our featured Artist of the Day, San Diego Wedding Photographer Jay Resh.

It is my goal, through my photography, to express the emotion of important moments, and tell life stories that will live vividly through time.
— Jay Resh

As a child, Jay spent as much time as he could exploring NYC’s MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art), Natural History Museum, and Hayden Planetarium. It was easy to see that his interests where deeply rooted in the arts and sciences. It was particularly at the MET where Jay fell in love with the idea of exploring his creative side.

The colors and contrasts of Romanticism painter, J.M.W. Turner, and the naturalism of form and detail in the sculptures of the great, Gian Lorenzo Bernini played a very large part in the formation of Jay’s interpretation of artistic styling.

Nothing seemed as inspiring to Jay as living within a world built upon, and surrounded by art. For Jay, photography was the artistic outlet he was looking for. It continues to provide him with the ability to be creative, and the mechanics and software processing involved with his photography also satisfies his love of sciences. It was the perfect combination.

The Way of the Artist Photographer and Why You Really Want One for Your Wedding Day

The Way of the Artist Photographer and Why You Really Want One for Your Wedding Day

1. The Artist Photographer lives and works from their heart.
Think about it. Don't you want someone who lives from a passionate heart photographing one of the most loving, passionate days of your life? A day where you see your Dad cry? And your Aunt and Uncle who have been divorced for a decade laugh and dance together? And your sister's kid gurgling with giggles, eyes wide with wonder, toddling up to each guest as they try to make it down the aisle? That's a big, heartfelt yes.

"If it's both terrifying and amazing, you should definitely pursue it." - anonymous

Photographic Artists Suzanne and Mike Ofeldt of Shewanders Photography make living their art and their play, they stay open to all experiences and inspiration and sometimes muse:

  • What would you be doing in an alternate reality?
  • Who would you be?
  • What would you create?

Suzanne and Mike say "Art and photography are our favorite ways to explore new realities. New realities within ourselves, others and the world around us. This month, we have been experimenting and recreating memories, dreams and other visions with portraits, groups and landscapes. We love being inspired with a wild perspective and making it come to life through photography."

2. The Artist Photographer is looking for beauty in, sometimes, the most unique places. As Suzanne told us "I entered into a photo contest with an entry called, 'The Town'. Our beginnings and endings, trials and errors, questions of identity and worth, dreams and risks can take place on any street. This is my collection of images and wishes that seeing beauty in a space might help others to see beauty in each other." We just love her!!!!

    3. The Artist Photographer stays in the moment so they can capture your soul. Artists capture spontaneity and joy on one of the most [sometimes overly] planned days of your life. That's because they are staying in the moment, looking for the light and the love and the art in your day.  You must be in the moment to stay in touch with emotion and when that happens and you are a talented photographic artist like Shewanders...we think magic happens.

    mike and boy.jpg

    4. The Artist Photographer stays inspired ... because life is magical and there's always some new adventure around the corner.  "Suzanne and I meet to discuss a new chapter of The Artist's Way on a weekly basis. This process has changed who we are as artists and as a couple. There are questions at the end of each chapter with subjects that hit deep and get to the root of our inner child and artist. It's a safe place to explore and be really open with each other, sparking conversations that bring greater connection and vulnerability. It's hard for me to always be super emotional, but this book makes it simple to realize the art that is already inside of you. It reminds you and gives you the confidence to experiment." - Mike

You may ask what about the tradition wedding shots we need? Of course the artist captures the photos you need like the wedding party, bride with family, groom with family, etc., but they also make sure to fly free to capture the spontaneity and the feels of your wedding so they can gift to you what they do best; images that will evoke the magic of your wedding day and inspire generations to come.   Thank you Suzanne and Mike for always inspiring us too!!  xo

This Week's Wedding Crush Wednesday Says a Fashion-Forward "I Do"

This week's Wedding Crush Wednesday features Alex and Ljubov Ovtsinnikovas from Russia/Estonia! These two said their vows in Centennial Park on Coronado with some of the best views of San Diego! While we already think these two are gorgeous, we love their winter ensembles too. With the coastal breeze and cool San Diego nights a night on the waterfronts can get a little chilly.  Ljubov's cropped jacket, and bright red  bouquet combined with Alex's stunning royal blue suit [very European!] makes the couple pop from their backgrounds. The Ovtsinnikovas' statement pieces are show-stoppingly perfect and showcase their style, their attitude and their love. Südamlikud õnnesoovid pulmapäevaks! (Congratulations from the heart on your wedding)!

One of our favorite Wedding photographer's favorite photographs from 2016

Tim Otto is one of our favorite San Diego wedding photographers and it is easy to see why!

    Tim Otto Wedding 1.jpg

Tim Otto [one of the nicest people you will ever meet!] is the kind of guy who at the end of the year can't wait to sit back and review all the weddings and engagements he photographed to reminisce about all the love, fun and memories he made with his couples. Here are Tim Otto's favorite wedding photos from 2016: they clearly show the heart and soul he puts into the weddings he photographs.

When you look at his work you can see that Tim likes to blend a variety of styles when he photographs people in love and weddings:  Tim works with everything from a photo-journalistic editorial approach, to a contemporary fashion edge, to classic romantic style.  Says Tim "I always enjoy photographing people and capturing their individual spirits; I think this is what drew me to weddings. I love weddings! I love telling the story of the entire day by capturing the many personalities and emotions on display as the events unfold.  I want to capture not only what people look like, but show what they feel like.  I want to give the bride and groom real, dynamic and beautiful photographs that they will treasure for a lifetime! I want to create an amazing and fun experience by making my couples feel comfortable in front of the camera without interfering with the flow of the day. A wedding is a celebration of love with family and friends; truly an amazing event.  I am honored and privileged be part of your day."  Yes Tim, we can tell! Please enjoy Tim Otto's favorite photos from 2016!

    IMG_2656.JPG

La Valencia hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla (known affectionately as the Pink Lady) offers some of the most beautiful wedding settings in Southern California. Tim Otto is one of the top wedding portrait, engagement and special event photographers and when these two come together well we're just in awe!

So, today we want to focus on the newer trend of featuring your best friend in your engagement and/or wedding photoshoots! The idea couldn't be any more perfect: it's a photoshoot that already features two people so in love, that they chose to spend the rest of their lives together.  So, why not include the non-humans that have been there for you throughout all of your ups and downs?  The ones who have sat beside your bedside when you weren't feeling well. The ones who are always so excited when you walk in the door from work. The ones who are just as excited for your wedding day as you are. We are saps for a good love story here at SanDiegoWedding.com, and adding dogs to the mix just makes us melt. Bringing the garden inside with a styled shoot at one of San Diego's loveliest wedding venues

An indoor wedding venue feels like a beautiful outdoor garden ceremony location with a styled shoot that brings the beauty of nature inside.

"If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden." wrote Author Frances Hodgson Burnett in the classic story 'The Secret Garden'.

We are starting the month of December with a warm indoors secret garden styled shoot feature! The amazing team that styled this wedding shoot wanted to turn the beautiful Luce Loft wedding venue into a forgotten garden dreamscape both industrial and overgrown with a touch of whimsical. With its white-washed brick, concrete and copper elements this shoot brings a beautiful contrast of industrial against naturally wild botany like ferns and ivy. Most San Diego wedding vendors see their fair share of outdoor weddings, but Luce Loft has amazing indoor venues as well that was captured here by Fog and Dawn Photography. Creating a theme that brought the garden inside brings inspiration for couples who are getting married in San Diego's cooler Winter months.

Star of India Wedding Points the Way Home to Love

The Star of India, built in 1863, is a magnificent atmosphere to celebrate life and love in San Diego! This iron-hulled beauty is the oldest active ship in the world (and a state and national historic landmark) and is the coolest nautical wedding venue ever (especially for these two San Diego natives!)  with the best views in town as it is right on the water! Jessica and Gregory's charming wedding photographed by Pink Light Images puts your right in the heart of this day of sun, sea and San Diego as you set sail for love and marriage!

After their amazing wedding on water Jessica and Gregory, both foodies, headed to an intimate reception on land. They held their dinner at The Wine Vault & Bistro - one of San Diego's best kept culinary secrets! Insiders know this is the place to go for great food and wine pairings. The reception guests enjoyed a second cocktail hour with tray passed appetizers and then we moved onto a 5 course menu that was paired with wine and spirits. The ambiance was very simple yet romantic with an all white theme and two acoustic guitarists playing English and Spanish cover songs throughout the night. It really was a Bon Voyage!

    Modern La Jolla Engagement

The modern architecture that surrounded Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla, was the perfect background for some bold and romantic engagement photos. Of course the couple took advantage of the stunning beach and pier within walking distance as Scripps Pier is a really great location on it’s own for photos, so what a bonus! The variety and color {love that red!} that wedding and engagement photographer Brit Jaye was able to get from these two locations in such a short amount of time, was a stylized dream. No doubt about it, lovely La Jolla is the perfect modern engagement shoot location in San Diego!

Fairbanks Ranch Wedding Proves Rain Really Is Good Luck on Your Wedding Day!

These gorgeous photos of Nicole and Ryan's wedding looks like a picture perfect sunny San Diego celebration of love... but this affable couple actually showed they have what it takes to navigate life's surprises with a few exciting twists and turns on the big day!

This lovely peach and mint green wedding at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club was supposed to be an outdoor ceremony overlooking the waterfront, but some unexpected rain [in San Diego, California!!?] brought the celebration inside to the reception area.

Although the wedding party and the bride had to work around a few dinner tables, there was nothing but smiles and love and lots of "but rain is good luck on a wedding day!"  Fortunately Nicole and Ryan also had selected a rock star coordinator in Carmel Hemsley. Carmel did the flowers herself and arranged all the catering, bar and DJ. And you know what... it turns out rain is good luck on your wedding day!

Vintage Luxe Wedding at the glorious El Cortez Bursts with Love and Color

There are few venues as quintessentially San Diegan as the El Cortez Hotel. Towering above everything else in 'uptown San Diego', this landmark Art Deco building, with its memorable neon titled rooftop, first opened its doors in 1927 to rave reviews and a loyal clientele of dancers, diners and revelers. Shuttered for years then opened by a couple of visionary developers, The El Cortez's ambiance, with its richly designed and upgraded gold gilded Don Room, is a beautiful place to celebrate love. And that's just what Christina and Ryan did!
